Wireless car charging: why it is slower and when to use a cable

Wireless charging in a car is genuinely convenient, and it is also the least efficient way to move power into a phone. Both things are true, and knowing when each matters saves frustration.

Why it is slower

Inductive charging loses energy as heat in the transfer. Under good conditions you might see 70 to 80 per cent efficiency; with poor alignment or a thick case, considerably less.

Heat is the real problem. Phones throttle charging when they get warm to protect the battery, and a phone on a windscreen mount in summer is already hot from the sun and from running navigation. It is entirely possible for a phone to charge more slowly than the screen and GPS drain it.

When wireless makes sense

  • Longer journeys where slow topping up is fine
  • Short hops where you want the convenience and do not need speed
  • Keeping a phone at a steady level rather than charging it from low

When to use a cable

  • You arrived with a nearly flat phone and need real charge
  • Hot weather, or the phone is in direct sun
  • You are navigating for a long stretch, which is the heaviest drain
  • You need the phone charged by a specific arrival time

Getting the most from either

For wireless, alignment is everything: a phone off-centre by a centimetre can drop output sharply. Remove thick cases and anything metallic between phone and pad.

For cable, the socket matters. A modern USB-C Power Delivery charger will charge several times faster than an old USB-A port, and many older car sockets deliver very little current.

What actually drains a phone while driving

Navigation is by far the heaviest load, because it runs the screen at high brightness, the GPS receiver, mobile data and often Bluetooth audio simultaneously.

  • Screen at full brightness in daylight: the single largest draw
  • GPS and continuous data for live traffic
  • Bluetooth or wired audio streaming
  • Poor signal areas, where the phone increases transmit power hunting for a mast

That last one is underestimated. On a rural route with patchy coverage a phone can drain faster than a 10W wireless pad can charge it, which is why the battery falls during a drive despite sitting on a charger.

Making wireless charging work better

  1. Centre the phone precisely on the pad; a centimetre off cuts output sharply
  2. Remove thick cases, and anything with a metal plate or card holder
  3. Point a vent at the phone in warm weather
  4. Reduce screen brightness where it is safe to do so
  5. Download offline maps for known routes to cut data use

Battery health over the long term

Lithium batteries degrade fastest when hot and when held at a high state of charge. A phone that spends every commute at 100 per cent on a warm windscreen mount ages faster than one that cycles between 30 and 80 per cent.

If your phone offers optimised or limited charging, it is worth enabling. For a daily commute, charging to around 80 per cent is better for long-term capacity than topping to full every trip, and for most journeys it is more than enough.
