Most people notice their car developing a musty edge somewhere around late autumn. It is not your imagination, and it is not that the car has suddenly got dirtier. It is moisture, and winter driving in the UK produces a great deal of it.
Where the moisture comes from
Every journey in winter brings water into the cabin. Wet shoes on the carpet, rain on coats, snow in the footwells, and the litre or so of water vapour a person exhales over a few hours of driving. With the windows shut and the car cold, none of it leaves.
That water soaks into carpet and seat foam, and damp fabric at ten degrees is an excellent environment for the bacteria and mould that produce a musty smell.
The cabin filter is usually involved
The cabin air filter sits in the path of everything the ventilation system pulls in. Over a year it collects leaves, pollen, dust and moisture. A filter that has been in place for two or three winters will often smell noticeably bad on its own.
If the smell is strongest in the first thirty seconds after you switch the fan on, and fades afterwards, the filter is the prime suspect. Most are accessible behind the glovebox and take a few minutes to change.

Practical habits that help
- Run the air conditioning for ten minutes a week, even in winter. It dries the system and the cabin.
- Switch off recirculation on wet days so the car draws in drier outside air.
- Use the windscreen demist setting rather than recirculated heat when the glass fogs.
- Take rubber mats out and empty them rather than letting water sit under them.
- Leave a dehumidifier bag in the footwell through the worst months.
Dry, clean, then freshen
The order matters. Dry the cabin, clean the hard surfaces and change the filter if it is due. A freshener added on top of that will smell clean and last properly. A freshener added to a damp car is money spent on covering a problem that is still growing.
Condensation, and why it is worse in some cars
Condensation forms when warm moist air meets cold glass. The amount of water involved surprises people: a car with four occupants on a wet hour-long commute can accumulate a significant volume on the inside of the glass alone, and all of it ends up in the carpet and seats as it runs down.
Cars with poor door seal drainage, blocked pollen filter housings or a leaking windscreen scuttle collect far more. If one footwell is consistently wetter than the others, suspect a leak rather than general condensation, and find it before winter rather than after.
Finding a water leak
- Check which footwell is wet, and whether it is worse after rain or after washing
- Look at the scuttle drains at the base of the windscreen, which block with leaves
- Check the sunroof drains if fitted, which are a very common cause
- Inspect door membranes behind the door cards, which perish and let water in
- Check boot seals and rear light cluster gaskets for damp in the spare wheel well
A persistent leak will defeat any amount of drying and fragrance. It is worth finding, because water in a footwell also reaches wiring and connectors, which is a considerably more expensive problem than a smell.
Using the car’s own systems
The heater and air conditioning together are the most effective drying tool you have, and running both is more effective than either alone. Air conditioning removes moisture from the air; heat helps it evaporate from surfaces in the first place.
On a wet winter morning, the fastest way to clear a fogged screen is to switch on the air conditioning, set the temperature warm, direct airflow to the windscreen and turn recirculation off. Many drivers do the opposite and wonder why the glass stays misted.
