Star projectors have become very popular, and they do look striking when parked. Whether they belong in a car being driven is a different question, and one worth thinking about before fitting.
What they do well
Parked, they are genuinely effective. For anyone who spends time in a stationary car, they transform the cabin cheaply, and USB versions need no installation at all.
The problem while driving
Moving points of light in peripheral vision compete for attention, and that is precisely what a projector produces. Human peripheral vision is highly sensitive to movement, which is useful for spotting a pedestrian stepping out and unhelpful when it is being triggered by your own dashboard.
There is also glare: projected points reflect off the inside of the windscreen and side glass, adding to the haze you are already dealing with at night.

A sensible compromise
- Use it parked, switch it off before moving
- Choose a unit with a physical switch rather than one that defaults to on with power
- Point it at the headlining, not across the cabin
- Avoid units with moving or rotating patterns for any on-road use
- Make sure it cannot come loose under braking
The legal angle
There is no specific offence covering star projectors, but if light is visible externally or an officer judges it to be affecting your control of the vehicle, careless driving is available to them. Off while moving avoids the question entirely.
Fitting one safely if you do want it
- Choose a unit with a physical on/off switch you can reach
- Mount it where it cannot come loose under braking
- Avoid the dashboard, where it will reflect in the windscreen
- Keep the cable clear of the driver’s footwell entirely
- Do not fit anything to an airbag cover
Build quality and heat
Many of these units are very cheaply made, with laser diodes and small motors that fail within months. A projector left plugged into a permanently live socket also draws current continuously.
Anything containing a laser should carry a class marking; avoid unmarked units, because an uncontrolled laser at eye level in a cabin is not a trivial risk. Units that use LED projection rather than laser are safer and generally last longer.
Better alternatives for the same effect
If the aim is a cabin that feels special at night without the drawbacks, subtle footwell lighting and a warm ambient strip achieve it and are safe to leave on while driving.
Reserve the projector for stationary use, which is when you would actually look at it anyway.

Not really. Static, very dim ambient light is one thing; moving projected points in your field of view is another. Switch it off on the move.

On a USB socket that switches with the ignition, no. On a permanently live socket, a unit left on will flatten a battery over several days.
